Lectio Divina
Jesus’ saying about the plough indicated that those who would share his ministry must make it their top priority, over every other concern. If someone were to keep looking back at what he had left behind (family, friends, etc.) or even at the work he/she had already accomplished, he/she would not be fit for the single-hearted dedication required of a disciple. Unattached and undeterred, Jesus set the example; today his sayings challenge us to follow him with similar determination.
II. MEDITATIO
How does God’s Word apply to our situation now? The following questions may help.
1. What defects and limitations of the disciples can we discover in the text?
2. What teaching method does Jesus use to correct these defects?
3. Which of the defects of Jesus’ disciples is most prevalent in us, his disciples of today?
4. Do you get the idea that this invitation to follow him is one to total conversion and commitment? After reading this Gospel what is it that you think Jesus wants from you?
III. ORATIO AND CONTEMPLATIO
We spend some time in silent prayer to meet the risen Lord who works in us through the power of the holy Spirit. We can repeat and keep repeating each of the following “mantras” or others from the text until we reach a still point where we can pray without words, where the Lord takes hold of us and transform us through his power.
“I will follow you wherever you go.”
Luke 9.57

By your life of wholeness and integrity, of generous charity and self-giving, especially to the poor and the needy, testify to the world about the beauty of Christian discipleship.
CLOSING PRAYER
Lord Jesus, we thank for the word that has enabled us to understand better the will of the Father. May your Spirit enlighten our actions and grant us the strength to practice that which your Word has revealed to us. May we, like Mary, your mother, not only listen to but also practice the Word. You who live and reign with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit forever and ever. Amen
